I remember they were a very common food item when we visited the UK in 1992. Can't remember the supermarket chain (Tesco maybe?), but there were days we'd get a premade bagel to take for lonch if we weren't sure we'd be able to find something on the way to whichever town was next.
We also ate at some chain of highway diner a few times too. Happy Eater or something.
