Boredom isn't necessarily the opposite of productivity for you. It might be a necessary recovery state.
But there's a crucial distinction:
Restful boredom: I'm allowed to stop. Nothing needs solving. I can stare at something, listen to music, watch Waldemar, potter around. Dissociative/procrastinating boredom: Fuck everything, I'm off tap, hours disappear, tomorrow-me inherits the pile.
And you're saying alcohol/drugs can push you into the second one while also satisfying the first need.
That's a pretty powerful combination.
You don't just want intoxication. You seem to want permission to become temporarily useless.
And I think your phrase “my life doesn't stop” is the heart of it.
