I used to think it was about the big dipper revolving around the north star, but due to procession, that's only how the sky looks like when its rotating through the year, for the past few thousand years.
So the swastika is older than how long the north star has been central to where north is perceived to be, so it can't be a representation of that.
Dunno what it is now.
