I was walking the dog last night around 11pm when I saw a man lying on his side on the grass by the footpath of Heddle Street which is a bit of Peachey Road. I was walking along a perpendicular road and initially ignored him as I didn't want to get involved in anything but I decided to go back in case he needed help. I cautiously approached him and relaxed when I realised he was about 60 or so. He was hard to understand as he mumbled and slurred quite a bit as he spoke but he seemed to mean something with his speech and wasn't just babbling incoherently like methheads do. He said he fell over and was stuck on the ground. He requested his phone which had fallen on the ground out of reach. I gave it to him and he was shaking pretty badly and struggled to take it. There were several cigarette butts and a lighter on the ground as though he had been smoking whilst laying there. I have no idea how he managed to smoke them with that tremor though. I helped him stand up and he seemed unsteady on his feet. He said he was fine to walk home and pointed to a nearby house. There was an empty gatorade bottle on the ground and when I asked him if he wanted his "water bottle" he declined and said "It's for wine" before laughing. He seemed like a harmless old gooner but I have to wonder why he was out walking and how long he had been stuck there. Strange bloke. He had that very scrawny wino look, not the bloated fat type. He had a leather vest on and some fingerless gloves. God knows what that was about. The dog was completely calm around him which I guess was a good sign.
