Hence "throwing" the baby out to distract predators. Giving mom another day to make roo babies while they could have died both in by the teeth of predator.
The action doesn't need to be based on conscious decision, it's an automatic defense mechanism. This is how evolution formed them.
During hard times people ate their own kids first because children are burden and useless and die easily - especially "back then". But adults can make more kids when hard times pass. It's not easy to comprehend with modern western thinking and with "think of the children glasses on".
