> Are the Fins from Finland or from the interior, where the large red dot is, like Belarus or whatever is in that bit.The red dot is in Izhevsk, the capital of the Republic of Udmurtia.
The dot is somewhere in Izhevsk, the capital of Udmurtia. As mentioned, this is a linguistic group.
Right, when people say "Finno-Ugric," they are referring to a group of peoples who share a common linguistic ancestry, despite often having vastly different histories, cultures, and physical traits.
> Russians – 62.2%, Udmurts – 28%, Tatars – 6.7%, Ukrainians – 0.6%, Mari – 0.6%, Bashkirs – 0.2%.But historically, Russians were in the minority; it’s just that the Udmurts assimilated, and in principle they’re also white, with light-colored eyes too. Who would have been able to tell the difference back then?
> Udmurt sounds like an insult."Udmurt" is simply the self-designation of the people (ud = meadow/field, murt = person). It is the name of their distinct culture and language, not an insult. It maybe seems a slight resemblance to the Russian word “morda” (a crude term for “face”).
