Machete started as a "fake movie" trailer in Grindhouse, a movie by Rodriquez and Tarantino that was a throwback to old horror double features, usually made on a shoestring budget, kind of campy, and the same pool of films all the Rob Zombie movies are trying to replicate. It was two films: Death Proof by Tarantino and Planet Terror by Rodriquez. Between the two was a handful of fake movie trailers by friends of theirs where more than half ended up being actually made into future films but that definitely wasn't the intent.

It bombed so the movies were split elsewhere on release and home media. I don't think the original version ever ended up home media, just the two split films that were re-edited to remove a lot of the "movie is playing on an old piece of shit film roll" effects.
