Let's take the name of Attila - which is one of the handful of names that remained from the Huns.
On one hand it is considered German. Since Attila plays and important role in the Germanic tribes, they preserved a tradition that incorporated Attila. See Niebelungenlied and some other stuff. Some historians believed that as the Huns subjugated and formed alliances with the Germanic tribes the Hun khagan gave a German name for his son, probably after marrying a German chieftan's daughter or some such. And ''Ata' means father in some old Germanic dialect.
This would suit some Hungarian researchers since
atya mean father in Hungarian too. But the Hungarian
atya and germanic
ata has no relations, did not develop the same root, so they say Attila's name is from the Hungarian
atya instead.
On the other hand there is the old name of the Volga, the Etil or Itil, which the Huns crossed ~370AD. And Atil - or Etzel how the Germs wrote it, is more likely that it came from that. And he was named after this notable event. But I think the Etil name is Turkic in origin.
And I'm fairly sure there are other explanations. This is just the top of my heda.
