For Western military thought the non plus ultra of warfare is maneuver warfare and they see everything through this glasses. They can't imagine that there are other ways to fight a war. This is why they misunderstand everything what Russia does.
What they also usually don't get that for Russia, Ukraine is just one theater of operations, while for Ukraine this is the whole war for them. Sure Russia don't have to fight openly on other theaters, but they still exists for the Russian view of their own military issues.
