In one of my FoE pieces, I started in a stable that was trying to breed alicorns, and had created a few half-breeds that:

* had a horn but couldn't magic
* could fly, but had no wings
* HAD wings, but could *not* fly

and a random-ish internet critiquer said I made cute earth ponies.

So in an effort to make a short-story (5K or less) I started with a wingless pterippus, and he was disappointed with how lackluster his flight magic was.

So I'm going to try to write the rest of it this week and then I'll post it here.
