I remember learning in school that Francis Scott Key was on a British ship at the time (the enemy during the war of 1812).
He was negotiating release of prisoners when this bombardment happen.
From inside enemy lines, trying to save your enslaved fellow brothers, you witness a strength and perseverance that breeds strong patriotism.
It is a very powerful poem/song.
