DataRepublican (small r) @DataRepublican - Dear Vice President Pence,
We met once, at a luncheon hosted by Congressman Burgess Owens—a good man, and, as I recall, a last-minute invitation due to low attendance.
That luncheon took place in 2022 during a politically ambiguous moment for you: after your visible alignment with President Trump, but before your announcement to run for President yourself.
In that intimate gathering—perhaps a dozen, maybe two dozen attendees—you made a point I remember clearly. You said most Republicans in Congress favored nominating moderate justices to the Supreme Court, but President Trump pushed for more ideologically extreme candidates. You credited him—explicitly and unequivocally—with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. You made it clear that Trump deserved the credit.
I also recall showing you how to fingerspell your name, which you graciously accepted. I appreciated that moment.
But in the same setting, you passed around a donation envelope—minimum contribution: $25,000.
To put that in perspective: even Congressman Owens, representing one of the most hotly contested seats in 2020, didn’t set that as his maximum donation. And in all my experience, I’ve never seen Donald Trump—or any other national figure—set that as an entry-level ask at a small luncheon.
That gesture told me something important about you: that your campaign wasn’t grounded in grassroots support. You were appealing to a donor class so insulated from everyday concerns that you thought $25,000 was a reasonable starting point.
That was the moment my husband and I looked at each other and our opinion of you changed dramatically that day.
I’m not sure what conclusion I expect others to draw. But I believe this story should be known.
