一只寒鸦，虚荣至极，捡起孔雀脱落的一些羽毛，插在自己身上，然后瞧不起旧伙伴，大模大样混进一群美丽的孔雀中。孔雀们立刻识破了这个闯入者，拔掉它借来的羽毛，用喙啄它，把它赶走。
倒霉的寒鸦受到惩罚，悲痛不已，回到以前的伙伴那里，想若无其事地重新合群。但它们想起它当初的傲慢，便把它从群体中赶了出去。
一个它不久前还瞧不起的同伴教训它说：“你若满足于天生的样子，就不会受到上等者的惩罚，也不会受到同辈的鄙视。”
