Hey anons. I was wondering what is the best media player for a modern 5 year old TV set? I need something that will work for 2TB external drives, x264 and x265 encoded video formats as well, whether mp4 or mkv. Something that will play most external drives. Any suggestions?

The older one I have only loads my 1TB drives and only works with x264 encoded video formats. It is completely outdated as far as what I would desire to work with now days.

Which is why using a hardware based media player is absolutely retarded. Get a proper software setup like kodi, plex, or tversity.

I don't hook my television up to my phone or Wifi though. I just wish to be able to play the more modern formats instead of having to rely on everything x264 encoded. One would assume newer plays could play x265 but who knows?

I've never even heard of 264/5 bit... Is that a region thing? Maybe try some sort of region free player

Not an expert by any means but x264 was the standard compression encoding method for MPEG-4 since 2004 and x265 is the successor which was adopted back in 2013 for an even higher video quality compression just a few years ago. The problem is, if you have older hardware and older software they are only compatible with x264 encoded video formats. So I would imagine there is something more modern that will allow users to play x265 encoded videos on their TV sets.

Besides quality being better for x265 encoded video files, they also happen to be smaller in size too, saving the user spare harddrive space when stored.

look for old "Xvid" players. Xvid released some actual players which probably work with way more codecs, IIRX. Very rarely DVD players will have an XVID logo

Just any PC is cheaper and more convenient.

I never have hooked up a laptop or PC to one of my TVs. If I could play any video on full screen and have a way to easily pause it, with a remote, I might consider trying it. It just seems like it would take up some space and be more of a hassle if there were no remote control options for the videos playing from computer to TV set.

Read about things like Kodi on x86 or maybe specialized Linux distributions. Although even Android is available on x86. In this case, you will have to find a broken laptop without a screen or an old system unit with Intel HD graphics, a USB dongle at a flea market. I think you will find information on the Internet how to put all this together. Personally, I use the PC Controller app for Android and on my wife's computer, which is in her bedroom, without any specialized software, because I have enough Russian online movie theaters in my browser and I get any series or movie very quickly.
