The site had a stronger sense of purpose, it still had soyduels and if you said something stupid/cringy/underaged you'd get soyquoted. There wasn't an admin culture besides respecting Kolyma so you don't get banned and occasionally posting on the Jarty to complain when Kuz does something shitty. I remember checking kuz's telegram everyday and having a love/hate relationship with him. We thought he would buy 4chan and then we could get our revenge. The 'jaks were more basic, there were no slopjaks yet. Cobson was the enemy of Feraljak and people were terrified of discord groups like the QAfe who loved BBC cobson edits. There were much fewer namefags but the ones that did exist were much more famous, established, and "classic" than modern sharty's innumerable snca literalwhos. People still mocked soyboys and the song I associate with the kuz era is Weird Science by Oingo Boingo.

I think the rise of /qa/ can only be understood as a counterculture to the rest of 4chan, which was dominated by otaku pedo neckbeards who would brag about the years they spent rotting on the site and would mock every newfag even if the newfag was a high quality poster. Soyjaks became the favorite baiting material of this movement that joined the groups of other posters like cirnoposters or sneedposters on /qa/. Soyposters WELCOMED every newfag, said "sisters" instead of "bros", loved irony, despised jannies, hated tranime etc. They did everything they could to be contrarian and not someday become the 4chan oldfags themselves. Somewhere down the line soyjaks became mostly self-insert reaction images and that's when these people started caring about the memes themselves and became 'jakkers.

Soyjak culture isn't as underground as people think it is. Go to a local graffiti spot and make a soyjak someone will eventually draw an arrow pointing to it and write "gem".
