DIRE WARNING! Congress is trying to steamroll Internet Digital ID (age verification) surveillance laws. They want everyone completely tracked wherever they go online whether major social media, porn sites, web forums, blogs, gaming networks, etc.

Do not panic but do prepare! Literally any kind of media you wish to download and backup I would highly recommend doing so. Be it your favorite movies, tv shows, music, music videos, youtube channels, software, ISO copies of operating systems (have activation keys or cracks for proprietary stuff), porn, ebooks, whatever you wish to physically store offline and have get it! Have multiple backup drives and keep at least one of them offline most of the time, preferably stored in a dry yet cool place or locked away in a safe. Multiple backups.

Decentralized p2p networks and the Tor network should still exist no matter what shitty laws these asshole control freaks pass. Make sure you have access to these networks BEFORE the laws come into place. There will be a break-away internet, the corporate surveillance censored shithole will exist but we will have alternatives. Make sure you keep two separate laptops for each, only using the spy grid for banking or crypto. Keep another laptop for everything else like p2p and the dark web. If you are smart you already have this planned out, and probably have media players for your offline TV set and an offline PC to store stuff with open-source local LLMs and other useful software. Very useful and valuable in the dark days ahead!

100% make no mistake the governments are going to try their best to strangle all online fun, this is an attempt to kill the free internet as we know it. You can still get around it though and I'll see you anons on the other side.

Also, anons should also consider going back to PHYSICAL MEDIA, not just offline digital backups although it's good to have a mix of both. Also think Bluerays, DVDs, CDs and vinyl records. Magnetic media is a pain and can be hit or miss when it comes to long term storage but you choose, it also is an option. I have a some of everything, including offline digital copies on multiple external HHDs.

Magnetic media is fine if you have backups. Always use the 3,2,1 backup method at the very least. Honestly solid state is also a bit iffy, I've had more solid state drives fail on me than hard drives. Every medium has it's flaws which is why you need to diversify.

When it comes to magnetic discs for HHDs I agree with you, they are much more resilient long-term than SSDs and I have had far more luck with those remaining in good condition over the years.

In general the last 12 years I have been building up my physical and digital collections, having tons of media, many both stored on physical copies and in offline digital storage too. The best way to reserve media is to have multiple duplicate backups on various mediums and NONE of them that rely on third parties or "the cloud".

Hopefully the Linux community (or rogue programmers) designs and pioneers some decentralized alternative breakthrough web browser/client similar to I2P or Tor where users can create an alternative to the corporatized world wide web that won't have and can't enforce the age verification/digital ID bullshit. I won't be using any of that shit. I won't ever use a smartphone either.

It is expensive but you can get 8TB, 12TB even 16TB magnetic SATA external drives. You'll of-course always want some spare backups with copies of all your files because if one drive ever crashes or gets corrupted you don't want to lose all those files, you best have the same files stored elsewhere offline. Mirror drives essentially. Yes you are going to pay money for it, it is an investment, but consider this: do you want physical ownership of media or not?

The other alternative route, which I also do, is collecting my favorite movies and classic TV shows on DVDs and box sets. Vinyl records and CDs for my favorite music. Stereos and multi-media players (like those made by Crosley) are still affordable last time I checked. DVD & Bluray players you can find at any Goodwill, thrift shop or garage/yard sale, or perhaps Ebay. Same with all the physical media.

That said I do not recommend any cassette technology, it might be a hip trend with young people today but I can't tell you how many times my cassettes have gotten eaten up, humidity got to them and ruined them, they get warped easily over time and go bad, sometimes long term storage the magnetic tapes just get hard and crumble apart. Video and audio cassettes are a total waste of money in my opinion, you'll end up throwing it out sometimes before you use the damn things.
