Ian Fleming and the CIA
Godfrey, who was the Royal Navy's Intelligence Director, wanted FDR to organize a foreign intelligence branch under one department, and one man, General William "Wild Bill" Donovan, Roosevelt's former legal aide. When Godfrey and Fleming continued on to Washington, Godfrey met with FDR and Fleming met with various military counterparts. While the Admiral pushed for Donovan's selection, Fleming worked on a proposal for what the new American intelligence branch would look like, namely something akin to Britain's MI6.
Both men were successful: FDR appointed Donovan on June 18, 1941 as the head of a new intelligence department with the title of "Co-Ordinator of Information," and Fleming essentially (as he put it) wrote the charter for this new organization. Donovan's agency was soon called the OSS—Office of Strategic Services—which later became known as the CIA, Central Intelligence Agency. Before Fleming left, Donovan thanked him with a special gift—a .38 Police Positive Colt revolver with the inscription, "For Special Services."

What I'd expect from these... first of all you get the Northern Lights (Southern Lights) Aurora that people can visibly see.
Then that electrical power converts to DC energy when it is absorbed by Earths magnetic field. The energy goes to "ground" which is ultimately the electromagnetic core of the Earth.
Within a few days of the arrival of large charged particle storms, we usually see an Earthquake increase starting a few days after arrival of the storm.
Time frame on this usually goes like this:
First a storm happens from the sun, charged particles sent towards Earth.
Usually takes 2-3 days for those particles to physically arrive.... then about 1 full day of actual airglow Northern lights... then about 1 day to absorb into Earth.
Then 1 day to come back up as new deep earthquakes and shallower larger earthquakes.
Whole process takes about 6-7 days from the point of the storm on the Sun to the point where the Earthquakes begin to do their thing.
Then, assuming there are no more solar storms, it takes about 1 week to spread out earthquake wise.
Now we're at about 14 days from the original solar storm by the time the Earthquakes start to die down.
If any other solar events happen in that 14 day period, it can add an INCREASE to the increase or at least carry on the original disturbance further.

Senate Intelligence Chair Richard Burr (R-NC) and Ranking Member Mark Warner (D-VA) updated reporters on the committee’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Chair Burr said several parts of their investigation, including the question of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, remain open. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee addressed reporters after reviewing FBI reports from the agency’s investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to replace retired Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. The six senators said the FBI’s reports did not corroborate allegations brought against Judge Kavanaugh by Christine Blasey Ford, a California psychology and statistics professor who knew the judge while in high school. They also vowed that the nomination would be voted on over the upcoming weekend.

Akhil Reed Amar and Clifford Sloan talked about the background of the 1803 U.S. Supreme Court case Marbury v. Madison, in which the court ruled unanimously that it was the ultimate arbiter of the constitutional validity of laws, establishing the principle of judicial review. Mess Attendant 3rd Class David Walker of Virginia -- a 19-year-old African American sailor killed on the USS California during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 -- was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. His remains were recently identified, more than 80 years after his death. Over 100 sailors and Marines lost their lives on the California.

Despite spending years buying acreage, hiring investment bankers and inking a supply deal with Tesla, Piedmont did not approach county commissioners until July 2021 with its plans.

Ioneer shares were up 16.3% at $16.30 on Friday afternoon in New York.

I understand this to some degree. Typically these days a volunteer has to be vetted before they begin working with people. This is for the protection of the people they're helping. That way if the volunteer turns out to be a criminal or has a record of abuse etc, they can be turned away before they have a chance to hurt someone.
I don't know why someone would go to a disaster zone to hurt people, however, this is the world we live in.
At least they're letting us help if we get a permit. A couple days ago it sounded like they were just turning people away with no options.

Tesla Isn't Getting Into the Lithium Industry

Despite his conference call comments about the shortage of refining capacity to provide battery-grade lithium carbonate and hydroxide, Musk was fairly clear on a podcast back in early July that Tesla will not directly enter the lithium business as some have speculated:
"Well, we don't want to go into the mining industry or the sort of refining industry because the limitation, I think, is actually more. For example, with lithium, it's more lithium refinement than it is the actual mining. So you better take the ore that contains lithium, and you've got to refine it and get it to battery-grade lithium hydroxide or lithium carbonate. And it has to be extremely pure. Otherwise, you could have a breakdown in the cell.
Though Musk did add an asterisk on the conference call that suggests Tesla may yet get into the lithium business if it can't secure enough supply:

Former doctor who participated in Jan. 6 attack killed in shooting at West Seattle home

A Seattle doctor whose medical license was suspended after she participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was shot and killed after pointing a gun at two people delivering paperwork at her West Seattle home on Tuesday.
A 40-year-old man whom police have not identified shot Tamara Towers Parry, 57, multiple times in the torso outside her Southwest Hudson Street home around 1 p.m., according to the Seattle Police Department and the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police have not arrested anyone and are not looking for suspects, spokesperson Detective Brian Pritchard said Wednesday.
Members of Towers Parry’s family did not immediately respond to inquiries Wednesday.
Towers Parry, who was in the midst of eviction proceedings, came out of her house and pointed a shotgun at the two men before the 40-year-old, armed with a handgun, opened fire. In a phone call Wednesday, Pritchard said the men did not work in law enforcement and were not there to evict Towers, but he would not describe the paperwork they were delivering.
Tuesday’s shooting happened less than two weeks after Towers Parry’s home was foreclosed on and scheduled to be sold at a Sept. 20 auction, King County housing records show. Towers Parry had failed to make about $24,000 in mortgage payments and still owed more than $225,000 on the home, which she previously shared with her ex-husband, according to the records.
A photo taken of the house on Tuesday showed a large U.S. flag hanging from the home’s front window underneath the word “QAnon,” the name of a far-right conspiracy theory that gained traction online after the 2016 election of former President Donald Trump.
A divorce, a multiple sclerosis diagnosis, increasing debt and an apparent descent into conspiracy theory marked the final years of Towers Parry’s life.
Troubles for Towers Parry may have begun as recently as 2015 when she developed a “rapidly progressive neurologic” condition while working for Swedish Health Services, according to a 2017 court filing in the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Washington.
Towers Parry said she had multiple sclerosis and wanted to keep the Hudson Street home so she could attend her regular neurology appointments in Seattle, according to a 2018 divorce record filed in King County Superior Court.
The couple finalized their divorce in October 2019, records show. About 15 months later, video shared online appeared to show Towers Parry participating in the Jan. 6 rally in Washington, D.C., wearing a coat and carrying a flag both festooned with a large letter “Q.”

“Hi patriots, it’s Dr. Tammy,” she says in the video while standing in front of the U.S. Capitol building. “We just stormed the Congress and I’m going to tell you right now: It was wild.”
In the video, Towers Parry describes entering the government building and being pepper-sprayed and tear-gassed.
“Compared to what our Founding Fathers did, it’s the least we could do,” she says in the video. “Joe Biden did not win. He’s hopefully going to prison.”
Social media users quickly identified Towers Parry in the days after the rally, drawing scrutiny to institutions she was once affiliated with.
The University of Washington School of Medicine, where student newspaper The Daily said Towers Parry had graduated from in 1994, confirmed she had never worked at the school in a Jan. 8, 2021, post on X. Swedish Health Services also posted about Towers Parry on X that day, saying she had not worked for the hospital group since May 2015. And the Washington Medical Commission announced on X the same day that it was processing multiple complaints about “Dr. Tammy Towers.”
While the commission investigated the complaints against Towers Parry, her ex-husband filed a declaration in King County Superior Court in August 2021, demanding she refinance the Hudson Street home according to the conditions of their divorce.
“[Towers Parry] has demonstrated that she is unwilling to execute the documents necessary to alleviate me of the debt on the Hudson property,” the ex-husband wrote in his court filing. “She has simply chosen to ignore the issue, and instead traveled to Washington, D.C. to be part of an uprising to overthrow the government.”
About five months later, Washington Medical Commission health law judge John F. Kuntz indefinitely suspended Towers Parry’s medical license after determining she had engaged in unprofessional conduct in violation of state law, state records show.

North Carolina’s Dormant Lithium Industry Is Suddenly Hot Again

Global demand for batteries has spiked in recent years thanks to climate initiatives that aim to electrify transportation and energy systems. This need, in turn, has pushed up demand for lithium used in lithium-ion batteries. A 2022 analysis by McKinsey & Co. estimates that the entire battery chain could grow by more than 30% a year from 2022 to 2030, when it is expected to push past $400 billion and 4.7 terawatt hours worldwide.
The need for the material is so great that a company in North Carolina is re-opening a mine that has been dormant since the 1980s to retrieve the metal inside. The company, Charlotte-based Albemarle Corporation, is the world’s largest lithium producer. In September, Albemarle got a $90 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to help support the domestic mining and lithium production expansion for the nation’s battery supply chain.
Part of that work includes reopening the dormant lithium mine in Kings Mountain, about 30 miles west of Charlotte. The money will be used to purchase a fleet of mining equipment so that Albemarle Corp. can extract the soft metal in rocks and subsurface fluids. The metal is a common component in batteries used to power electric vehicles (EVs) and provide electricity storage. A DoD press release pointed to the agreement with Albemarle as securing “supply chains for minerals and materials critical to the DoD and the commercial sector.” North Carolina has become a major focus of lithium production because of its vast metal reserves.
According to a Sept. 12, 2023, press release announcing the Defense Department investment, the planned Kings Mountain mine consists of ”one of the few known hard rock lithium deposits” in the country. The site is expected to provide sufficient material for 50 kt LCE (lithium carbonate equivalent) of conversion capacity and support the initial production of about 1.2 million EVs a year.
“As one of the only U.S.-based lithium companies to carry out lithium extraction, processing, and novel lithium battery material research in the United States, Albemarle is uniquely positioned to help power the clean energy revolution,” Eric Norris, Albemarle president of energy storage, said in a statement. “Lithium is an essential ingredient in our sustainable energy future. Demand is expected to increase significantly, and it is imperative to secure our nation’s supply of this critical resource.” Albemarle estimates that the Kings Mountain mine will become operational as early as late 2026.
The company said it’s implementing “IRMA-Ready” standards at the facility, which it calls an “operational playbook” for mine sites in the exploration phase. Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) standards focus on ecological stewardship and community engagement.
In addition to its North Carolina mine, Albemarle has sites in Australia, Chile, and Nevada. As of late November, the Kings Mountain mining project was in the development phase, which includes environmental studies. The next phase will be filing local and state permits.
Elsewhere in North Carolina, U.S. Senator Thom Tillis has shown his support for responsible leadership on lithium: “We’re sitting on top of the largest single deposit of hydrate lithium in North America,” Tillis said about Gaston County, later adding, “We have to lead by example, and if we do we will accelerate our self-dependence.”

Janet Yellen, U.S. Treasury Secretary, recently traveled to the state to visit Livent, a lithium hydroxide processing company that gets its supply from Canada and Argentina. As The New York Times reported, Livent expanded its plant in Bessemer City, N.C., and increased its manufacturing capacity there by 50% following the passage of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which includes tax incentives for U.S.-made EVs.
Despite pushback from environmental groups who oppose the mining projects, Yellen defended lithium investments in North Carolina and elsewhere. Among other things, she said such investments could bring more energy security to the U.S. while also lowering energy costs and bringing higher wages to low-income communities.
“Key supply chains in areas like clean energy are over-concentrated in China, in part due to unfair nonmarket practices over decades,” Yellen said during her North Carolina tour. “With massive increases in domestic manufacturing capacity, our country will become less dependent on other countries for the inputs we need, and we will make great strides toward energy security.”

Mr. Woodward also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.
Clips were shown of Mr. Woodward speaking October 7, 2010, on the “Charlie Rose Show,” in 1994 about the working relationship between President Clinton and Vice President Gore, and in 2007 about President George W. Bush.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave his views on U.S. foreign policy. He focused on the Middle East, including stopping Iran from creating nuclear weapons and helping the people of Israel, Libya, and Syria. He criticized the Obama administration and said that the president had failed to lead and that “hope is not a strategy.” Topics included the size of the U.S. Navy and the war in Afghanistan. Former Governor Romney spoke to cadets in the Virginia Military Institute’s Hall of Valor. He made several references to VMI graduate George Marshall, the chief of staff of the Army who became secretary of State and of Defense.

Ceremonial Swearing-In of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh
Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th Supreme Court justice in a ceremony at the White House. In remarks before the swearing-in, President Trump apologized to Justice Kavanaugh and his family for the “terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure,” referring to the Senate confirmation process. After taking the oath of office, administered by his predecessor, Anthony Kennedy, Justice Kavanaugh thanked the president for his support and affirmed his commitment to judicial independence and impartiality. “The Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional. That process is over. My focus now is to be the best justice I can be. I take this office with gratitude and no bitterness,” said the new justice. In addition to recently retired Justice Kennedy, all nine sitting Supreme Court justices attended the East Room ceremony. President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh on July 9 and he was confirmed by the Senate, 50-48, on October 6.
