Monaco's Ahsani brothers plead guilty in U.S. to vast bribery scheme

LONDON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two brothers from the Ahsani family, who ran Monaco-based oil and gas consultancy Unaoil, have pleaded guilty in the United States to being part of 17-year scheme to pay millions of dollars in bribes to officials in nine countries.

The U.S. Department of Justice said on Wednesday that Cyrus Ahsani, 51, and his 46-year-old brother Saman each pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) on behalf of companies to secure oil and gas contracts.

Steven Hunter, a 50-year-old British resident and former business development director, also pleaded guilty in August to one count of conspiracy to violate the FCPA.

The Ahsanis, who are British citizens, conspired with others, including multiple companies and individuals, to bribe government officials in Algeria, Angola, Azerbaijan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Libya and Syria from around 1999 to 2016, U.S. prosecutors said.

Cyrus Ahsani, the former Unaoil chief executive, and Saman Ahsani, who was once chief operating officer, laundered the proceeds of their bribery scheme and destroyed evidence to obstruct investigations in the U.S. and elsewhere, prosecutors said.

Hunter participated in the conspiracy by facilitating bribes to Libyan officials between about 2009 and 2015.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Russian man arrested at his north Raleigh mansion late last year has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Utah.

According to court documents, Leonid Teyf, 57, was part of a scheme where several trucking companies paid more than $1 million in bribes to the Utah FedEx ground hub manager.

Teyf was originally investigated by the feds in Raleigh in a murder-for-hire plot involving the son of his housekeeper because Teyf thought he was having an affair with his wife.

But the investigation ballooned to outside the $5 million north Raleigh mansion where the housekeeper, her husband, and son -- all from Russia -- lived with the Teyf family.

Soon the feds were accusing Teyf of being involved in a $150 million dollar kickback scheme in his native Russia and bringing some of the money to the United States.

Grassley stated:
The State Department report said: “Instances of classified information being deliberately transmitted via unclassified email were the rare exception and resulted in adjudicated security violations.” That clearly says some individuals deliberately transmitted classified information on unclassified systems. Each of these three arguments treats the 2016 result as sacrosanct, but the final claim is a bit more subtle: The American people chose Donald Trump and the only way to litigate that choice is in the next election. In this style of politics, Jan-Werner Müller notes in “What is Populism?,” “other political competitors are just part of the immoral, corrupt elite.” For populists, he writes later, “only some people are really the people.” Trump makes this explicit whenever he denounces entire cities as violent hellscapes or ignores crises and emergencies in states that didn’t vote for him. Trump has not tried to represent the nation as a whole and does not pretend to govern on everyone’s behalf.

Instead, he casts himself as a representative of “the people,” narrowly defined as his supporters, who are themselves — in a sort of circular logic — the essence of the nation. In the Trumpist vision, the 2016 election stands apart from all others. It’s no longer a grant of constitutionally-bounded authority. It becomes a kind of coronation, in which Trump is sanctified as the embodiment of a “real America,” the actual size of which is irrelevant.

Under this logic, the pro-Trump case against impeachment is straightforward. Democrats, hostile Republicans (“human scum”) and dissenting bureaucrats are illegitimized by the fact of their opposition, whenever it started and whatever the reason. That opposition, in turn, is a repudiation of “the people” of Trump’s imagination, which is how the use of a legitimate, constitutional process becomes an attempt to “overturn” their will.

This topsy-turvy logic about the will of the people can end only in an ugly place. Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is the top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council. All of these accusations and attacks come from the same place. Trump is the nation, and the nation is Trump. As “the people” incarnate, he cannot be challenged. Right now, that just means the public should reject impeachment. But it seems to set up a similar argument, should the next election end with Trump on the losing side.

There's a certain enzyme in some people's liver that metabolizes SSRIs differently than the mean. For some, Akathisia can set in at seemingly random times, they eventually snap and most kill themselves. Some, however, go all Bird Box and start taking other people out with them.
Of course, sometimes there are examples wherein all they do is forget what happened for a while. In this case, it's easy to pin something on them because of the overwhelming energy around them and their being unsure of what just happened. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about Pierre Delecto. Pierre isn’t a real person — he’s the fake persona made up by Senator Mitt Romney for his secret Twitter account, which was recently uncovered after some expert forensic work by Slate’s Ashley Feinberg.

Anonymity online is nothing new — arguably it’s a newer concept to browse the internet and comment under your real name, rather than use a screen name or pseudonymous avatar. And there’s plenty of historical precedent for powerful politicians hiding behind names — from Carlos Danger back to Samuel Adams’s 25 pseudonyms, including the super-metal name Vindex the Avenger.

But Pierre’s outing comes at a contentious time for privacy and anonymity. At present, unknown individuals are having an outsize impact on politics. Donald Trump’s impeachment inquiry is a result of the testimony of an anonymous whistle-blower; the next highly anticipated political book is an account of the Trump White House written by the anonymous author of the 2018 Times Op-Ed “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration.” Head to a Trump rally or a fringe online community and you’re likely to stumble upon devoted fans of QAnon, the cultish conspiracy plot. QAnon is two years old this week, and despite numerous debunkings and false prophecies, the chatter continues. Online, journalists and political campaigns fend off anonymous trolls posing as real citizens. Hashtags are hijacked, discourse is poisoned — all by faceless figures....
