another method is to check if the cut is shiny or cloudy in basswood/willow, but I never trust my eyes so I stick to shaving
>How did you fix the blade in?I drilled a small hole as a general guide then heated the handle to burn its way into the wood
then I used superglue to fill the gaps
you might want to be careful with this method as it might ruin your hardening
if you see blue near (or on) the blade, it's fucked and needs to be quenched and tempered again
make sure the steel is hard enough too, if a chainsaw file grabs the steel instead of sliding over it you're wasting your time
try the file method on chinese knives and on your mora knives to see what I'm trying to say
